SL/R230: R230 - changing to LED DRLs
Picked up the car from the shop today. I am quite happy with the results. Here are some 'quick and dirty' iPhone pics;

I don't mess around ;-)
The last time I had a "car bug" was back in NOV 2003 when I bought my ///M3.
Things gradually fizzled out and it just became a "daily driver."
The fever is now renewed! I have one more mod on my mind:
Not sure when and how but someday I WILL replace
that wooden interior trim with Carbon Fiber in this SL!!

Took it to a best stereo shop in town (that my body shop works with).
These guys had everything figured out in one hour and hooked up my LEDs
to my Fog Lights harness !!! (No need to go via a separate cigarette light
circuit as was mentioned above!!!) This means I control everything with my fog
light switch. That WAS my #1 option and I'm happy they could do it.
They just installed load resistors instead of fog light bulbs. (I am still working
on getting the info about the exact load value or a P/N for you guys).

I am not listing the individual prices for parts since I purchased them at wholesale through my friend's shop (around $360).
A MB dealership quoted me $618 with taxes, but when I checked the parts online, I was
coming out with roughly $500/$550 neighborhood). I am sure you have your own parts sources.
LED light - 221-820-17-56 Left
LED light - 221-820-18-56 Right
LED light housings (plastic with chrome coating that surrounds the LED light):
221-885-27-23 Left
221-885-28-23 Right
Socket Plug. You will need 2 (1 per side). These will plug back into LED lamps
after you tap into your fog light circuit.
022-545-19-26
Receptacle Contact Crimp. You will need 4 (2 per side)
000-982-27-26
These get soldered to wires and clamped inside of the above mentioned socket.
They are nothing more but sturdy metal tips for wires that are inside of the socket.
===================================
You will also need:
- 4 custom grills (2 per side). My body shop made first paper templates, then they
cut out aluminum sheet and molded them accordingly. Secondly they also cutout
similar pieces of out metal mesh. Both layers were painted black and connected.
There is also a thin plastic molding around the edges of these grills.

50W/6 Ohm load resistors in order to eliminate flickering
of LEDs' and eliminating of any errors on the dashboard (under $10 online).
I was told that they get pretty hot so they MUST be mounted to a metal surface.

with my fog light switch. Not a big deal - took me 3-4 days to get
used to it. I am using them as day time lights so its just now a habit
to turn on the switch immediately after I start the car......and no, they are
not too bright......(nice and bright....but not too bright...perferct to my taste)
