SL/R230: Direct connection to interior Canbus ?

Direct connection to interior Canbus ?
I am working through a number of issues with my newly acquired SL55 project. I have fixed the leaking roof hydraulic cylinder, drooping trunk flaps and cracked boot lock thanks to excellent forum postings I have found.
One thing that has hindered me is that Star cant see the components on the internal CANBUS. Looking at the wiring diagrams it appears that the electonic ignition switch acts as a gateway to the lower speed CANBUS and I cant connect to the switch either. The ignition works fine however and the car starts ok.
Is there a way to directly connect to the interior CANBUS or do I need to replace the ignition switch?

Update: turns out that there was nothing wrong with the ignition switch (eis). The clue was that star also could not connect to the airbag. Both ignition switch and airbag diagnostic is on pin 1 of the obd port. The fault was in the sdconnect cable. Lesson:don't jump straight too most complex and expensive problem diagnosis
