SL600 R230 Air pump repair.
So my secondary pump failed down... I got the engine light and the fault code few times now.... so I decide to take it of before I ordered a new one.
It took a while to found where the pump is at SL600
It's NOT at the right side under the headlight.... and it's not under left side headlight
The pump located at the right under the coil pack.... at the front of the engine.
It was tight to take it of but it was much easier than I first thought. Only 1/2 hour.
When I look at it I wonder what the problem could be when it's not run... so I decide to open it before I order a new one....
(I had my I-phone at my house so I could not take any picture yet but I'm gone do it when I install it bak. This pump cost here approx 1200 USD).
I found the problem and I laugh for my self. It was very dirty inside.... lot of black dust.... al lot of it. Lot of this dust was at the bearings to so the pump need a lot of more Amp to run.... and therefore you got the fault code.... I'm pretty sure about that.
The two coals was also like a new ones.
So I'm gone only clean it up and order new bearings because I have already opened it.
So the repair is only gone cost 10-20 USD and after that is like a new one.
Easliy earned money...
So you only need order two bearings which have following numbers 608S and change them and that's it.
If you want order a new pump I have found out what this secondary pump part number is.
- Mercedes OEM partnumber is 0001404285
- Bosch part number for Mercedes OEM is 0580 000 018
- Bosch own part number is 0580 000 017
The same smog pump have three different part numbers . It depends on who you ask.
This pump fit SL600 R230 and many different mercedes models also.

Hello.
Today I have install the repaired air pump and it's work perfect... no engine lights at the tacho anymore....
Because I had not my I-phone with me when I strip it down I decide to take pictures when I install everything together.
At the first picture you can see how must dust it was inside the pump.

I let the engine run at 10 min in cold weather. I heard when the pump start to run and so on many times... and no engine lights at the tacho...
It took approx 2-3 hours together to take it of clean it inside and install new bearings and bak to the engine.
PS. THE TWO BEARINGS COST TOGETHER 8 Eur / 10 USD.

My 98 SL500 air pump makes a "gear-like" sound on a cold start. When the idle settles down to 700 RPM the noise goes away. I suppose the pump is turned off then. I did have a light and cleared it and so far it's not back on. Should I hear the pump from the drivers seat? Do I have bad bearings and if so, where do I Find them? This is not something MB of OKC will sell parts for.
