SL/R230: Chrome Key

Chrome Key
I want to upgrade to the newer chrome key. Many people say to use oempartsdirect.com to do this, but I believe the website has changed as I can't find the key on there and it doesn't seem like the site explained in the posts. Is this the only way to get the key or how else can it be done without going to the dealer?

SL 55 and a GT 3000 vr4 Here's my car: http://home.online.no/~ludvs/index.cfm
I think that I read here somewhere in a previous post that it can't be done.
Something about that the electronics inside won't fit in the chrome key.

I recently purchased a 2003 SL500 and it came with the chrome key. It works, I just wish that I could code one key to two vehicles, so I do not have to carry around two of these keys. My other vehicle is a Jeep Commander and use's the same type key.

If you just want your key to be in chrome (don't need an additional key) there is a way to retrofit the new case onto the old key. There was even a guy on one of the forums that would do it for you, although I'd be hesitant mailing my key in 2 directions in case it got lost.
The procedure posted wasn't that hard, but you'll have to search for it. Was either here or on Benzworld. It involved buying a used chrome key from eBay and basically taking apart both keys and swapping parts.
Wasn't rocket science but looked like a 15 min job with some mini screwdrivers.
If you want a brand new key, the ONLY way to get one is from a dealership. The online parts places have it listed in their database but they can't order keys. If you place an order, they will reject it and tell you they aren't allowed to order keys.
All TRP parts (Theft Relevant Parts) like keys, EIS/ignition switches, and other related parts have to be ordered by a dealer.
You need to sign a form and show ID and vehicle registration in your name. Then when the key arrives, you have to show the same ID again to pick up the key. They keep the form and copies of the ID on file.
Every dealer will tell you the same thing. Even if your sales guy knows you really really well and orders you a key, he's providing HIS information to the parts department .. they don't even let dealership employees order keys by bypassing the rules!
