I've searched but to no avail. When replacing the exterior door handle on an R230 is it similar to earlier Mercedes where you simply remove the retaining screw from the back of the door, insert the key and turn 90deg to the lock position and slide the handle forward and out or, do you need to remove the door panel?

Yes, it is similar. No need to insert a key into the lock cylinder, though. And no need to remove the door panel.

Detailed instructions with pictures are in your WIS -- I think under Group 72.

 

Thanks Rod for the confirmation. I had a feeling this would be the case.

I checked WIS before posting under Group 72. The procedure for replacing the exterior door handle states removal of both the door panel and the rear door trim piece. I was a bit surprised to read this. I'll do a little more investigating. I was surprised I was unable to find anything on the forum or through a google search.
