Exclamation 7 Speed Faliure

A colleague of mine just purchased a new 04 sl 500 sport, after 2600 miles the trans failed and is currently being replaced...he is not very happy. MB is very concerned and is having the trans shipped back to Germany for analysis.

how did it "fail"? Did it just stop going into drive? Blow up while in motion? Fail to engage in certain gears? What was the exact issue with it?

Please let us know the failure mode. I've got 1500 mi on my 04 SL500 Sport and the trans seems fine. Did it give any warning before failure?

My SL-500 sport with 1003 miles on the odometer experiences, on cool mornings, when starting from a stop a very significant transmission shifting pattern. Harsh shifts until the car warms up. Say 4 to 5 miles. When I say cool I mean mid to low 40's F. (Florida) Should I be concerned?

This is normal on all Benzes. When you first start driving in the morning, shifting is going to be a lil more rough than when the car is warmed up. The car holds the first two gears longer so that the cat converter warms up quicker. Once it's warmed up (after it goes thru the first two gears a few times or about 5 minutes) it will shift normally again. No worries.

We had a failure here too....

didn't make it 50 miles. Apprently a seal gave way, goofing up some specific pressures, and it would not shift out of second gear. Customer agreed to hang in, a new came in the box via FedEx and he was going on Christmas Eve. Sure would make me think twice. ...
