SL/R230: ABS failure

ABS failure
Inherited a 2003 SL 500 (R230) and am working through various issues. Recently the Stop sign and Brake warning light flashed on the dash. The brake pedal will go all the way to the floor, then suddenly stiffen up and work normally, then push to the floor. This occurred out of no where and I'm not sure where to start diagnosing this problem. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

'97 S500 Coupe, '94 E320 Wagon, '04 500SL
HAD same problem when started in garage ABS BRAKE WARNING no BRAKES. Heard ABS pump running on and off. Shut it down and cleared code with MB II ICarsoft. Checked Brake fluid was LOW!!. Removed key. Filled with MB DOT 4+ Plus. ALL WAS GOOD!! Seems like a safety issue to loose brakes with low brake fluid and no low brake fluid light! Merecedes manual says do not add brake fluid it won't help and visit MB shop.

Sire, I wouldn't be so sure about that. Oil can leak from the system anywhere and the dealer charges insane money for a diagnosis.
