DVD Nav

I was talking to my dealer today and asked about the changes for 05. He said the dvd-based nav is definitely going to be on the 05. And I followed it with, 'oh, so it will be touchscreen'. He said, it will be dvd-based but not touchscreen???

Is this true that it will be dvd-based but not touchscreen?

That stinks! But, I guess it's better than what we have on our SLs today. I wish they would convert to touchscreen soon.

I personally do not understand all the fuss about DVD Nav v CD Nav. I have CD Nav on my 04 SL500 and it works perfectly. My wife has a new Lexus 330 with DVD Nav and it insists on bringing her to the wrong road to our community so she does not get to our house! I would rather have a CD Nav that works!

What are the major differences one can expect from a DVD nav versus a CD nav?

Voice-Activated Navigation is right around the corner as well. Our Technical Rep. came out and demonstrated the new system that will be on the S and CL very soon!!!

The biggest difference is the ability to store more data on a single disc. The DVD version will have the entire US, Canada and Hawaii on 1 DVD. The CD-rom version had about 12 discs to cover just the US and Canada!!

Since the current (2004) DVD nav systems in the S and CL support some voice recognition when paired with a phone and VCS, what additional voice recognition features did you see demonstrated?

Gosh, I hope the 330 is comfortable for her to sleep in. Does it come with a portable shower?

I think the unspoken hope of everyone looking forward to the Mercedes DVD nav is that it will be like the Lexus DVD nav, which is great. While any system’s map may miss some roads, I know from experience that the Lexus (LX/470) touch-screen system is easier to use and has a much better and more informative display than the CD-based system in the SL and S. My wife drives the Lexus and she rarely fails to remind me of the nav screen difference when she’s in my car.

I agree with you sillydriver! I've had 2 Lexus' with NAV systems and the touchscreen is the best. It makes typing directions very easy. These nav systems are by no means perfect in terms of driving directions but the fact that it is touchscreen makes it awesome. I have to say that the Lexus nav has only missed a couple of times based on my experience. And it wasn't really that off the mark either.

I think the move to dvd is a step in the right direction for MB. No more swapping cd's when travelling across states.

Can we assume that the new DVD Nav will be the same as what we have on the current S and E? These have soft keys and is easier to use with a much bigger screen. It is not Lexus, but it is better. Or will the SL get a newer version?
