Suspension setup?

So today, when i removed my bent rim to get it fixed, noticed that there is a joint that surprised me how close to the tire is located. It's at equal height on both sides, but it really bothers me that i can't squeeze even a finger in between the joint and the tire. Is this normal? There is no marks on the tire as if it would rub or something, but curious if that's how it was built, because it's right above the tire.

I did change the rims - from 18" to 20", but it didn't raise the car that much. Also i didn't notice that earlier, so wondering if it's not a sign that the ABC system is going to give me some hard time in the near future. See attached pics

Steering knuckle mounted to upper control arm.



You may or may not have the two piece upper control arm item 150. The older model R230's such as mine have a one piece control arm.

Yes, that's exactly what it is. The question is - is it normal for it to be that close to the tire? I can't slide even a finger in between that and the tire?

Yes, very little clearance hence very limited on tire diameter. Rim diameter is another issue only limited by the tire side wall ie, the thinner the side wall, the larger the allowable rim diameter. A good tool to play around with stock tire/rim combinations and offsets & still maintain the correct rolling diameter is here.

Did you once belong to bimmerboard forum?

Ok, that should give me the peace of mind I was looking for 😁 I used to sell tires a while ago, so when I got 20" I did make sure it will stay as close as possible to the original height, but the car did go up 1 inch or so - which makes it 0.5 inch bigger diameter. The weird part for me is that I did not notice that arm there earlier... silly me, I guess?

And no, I've never been on the bimmer forums before I decided to get the r230 I was thinking about a BMW 6 series. But when I realised the SL comes with hard top for the same money - didn't need any other reasoning!

There shouldn't be any relative movement between the upper knuckle/ball joint attachment and the tire so you should be OK. It's not a very friendly joint to have interference with but the picture doesn't show any tire contact.
