This question is for SL drivers whose cars do not have the automatic trunk lid raise/close feature.

Is your trunk lid comparatively "heavy" to open?

Mine is. I replaced the struts last year with new Stabilus struts. Shoulda saved my money ... the trunk lid is just as heavy as before. I mistakenly thought that the new struts would cause the trunk lid to pop up to its full open position, similar to the way the trunk lid pops up on my wife's E350.

Is the "heavy lid" just another quirk of R230s?

My trunk lid is quite heavy and doesnt spring open even with new Mercedes struts.

Bingo Heatwave! Mine is the same with 2 new struts from autozone which I replaced myself when I got the car. Originals were shot. My wife always hates to open the trunk lid. It is a solid thing compared to our Honda Civic. Virtually not even there.

Interesting. Those struts were the first things I replaced when I got the car. The new struts worked "too well". The trunk springs up too fast. I need to hold it to slow it down a bit. The force holding the trunk up is so high, I almost need two hands to close it. My wife can't do it without using two hands.
I've been thinking about buying a different pair hoping they won't work so well.
