See this thread for solid info: https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-...nk-struts.html It's all anyone needs (myself included) to swap them DIY-style.
Welcome to the forum. Lots of good info here. Search works pretty good and will help reduce dupe threads. Good luck with the struts.

Ven: your car looks great.
Question: Is the center console in our cars assisted by a gas strut? Your post state that one of the struts you replaced is in your center console. News to me: I never knew the console was supposed to open and stay in place ... mine flops down as soon as I turn it loose. However, if I raise the console lid back to the full-open position, it slips past a notch and stays in the fully-raised position. How does one gain access to that strut? Apparently, mine is overdue for replacement.
Thanks for your informative posts.

Regarding the center console strut, that's the only one I haven't done yet.
But when the time comes, I plan to refer to this thread as guidance: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r230...sassembly.html

About the console lid hydraulic assist
How much of the console has to be disassembled to replace the assist cylinder? If only the rear-center lid has to be removed to gain access to the cylinder, I might be interested in attempting to replace my (obviously failed) cylinder. But if I gotta remove the entire center console just to get to the cylinder ... I can probably live with it.

To gain access to the hydraulic strut that supports the console lid, remove the two screws (T20 screwdriver required) in the back of the deep center console. This frees the rear center console lid ... wiggle it out. The strut is secured by an external snap ring ... slip a hooked dental pick (or such) into the ring and slide it off the pin that secures the rear of the strut. The piston-end of the strut is screwed into a longitudinal bar ... screw the piston stem out of the bar and ... voila! ... you're holding the strut in your hand. I'm ordering a new one today.
Many many thanks for all the pix links you posted.

There's another gas strut not mentioned anywhere (that i could find), and it just happened to crap out on my SL55.
It's on the Vario roof located under the Rear Shelf hinged flat cover that folds up, and back down during the roof operation.
Just above #11 on the picture.
Part number is 230 790 00 79, and I can't find an equal anywhere. If anyone can, please post it here.
It ranges from 4.75" to 7.25" and has only 11 pounds of force, with a 6mm clevis on both ends.
The strut allows the hinged panel to fold flat during closing, and if it does not, it catches the roof as it is coming out of the Easy Pack position.
You can manually fold the hinged portion in, and continue the roof closing if required. It hard to see because it is only visible when the hinged portion is halfway folded, and not easy to see when the roof is open or closed.
MB wants $52. I found some in Germany for less than $10, but shipping is $45. Looking to see if I can get one shipped for less.

On these Lift-o-mat style struts, I try to find the OEM part number. I found it under the MBZ part number on Amazon as a Sachs strut, and it's OEM part number is SG403056. Searching by that, I found a few places in the USA selling it for under $40 (liftsupportsdepot.com)
