SL/R230: Green flashing light in Trunk

2007 SL550
Green flashing light in Trunk
Maybe someone knows in my 2007 SL550 there is a flashing green push button light in the trunk, i would say backing onto where the drivers side rear lights are. Pushed it out of curiosity and it seems to make a recycling sound. Can't figure out its purpose

NO LONGER ACTIVE
At 6'2" and 230lbs, if I get locked in the trunk, it's going to take more than a flashing green button to get me out - I think you'd need the Jaws of Life! 
Actually, this reminds me of when I worked at the dealership. There was one of these buttons (as required by law) in an R171 SLK trunk. If you think the SL's trunk is small, the SLK's is minuscule. We were joking about it and one of the service receptionists bet that she could fit in there. Now, she was a fairly averaged sized young woman, so I was skeptical, but she did, and then tested the button and of course it worked.
