I own a 2007 SL550; Q1 - is this a R230 or R?? model? Q2 - anybody tried fitting a back-up camera to this car and linking it with the Command display? I’m told by my usual reliable auto electrical tech (Best Buy Geek) that the ‘wiring’ is fiber optics and special tools are required. Correct?

A MY2007 SL550 is an R230. "R" is for "roadster" and 230 is the chassis style. The MY2013 and later is the R231. YOu will also see other MBZ models referred to as "W" and a three-digit number. "W" = "Wagen" or "car".

The COMAND unit in your car is version NTG 2.0, which I don't believe supports a backup camera because it lacks a video input. I know the MY2009 facelift that uses NTG 2.5 has a video input and can have a camera added - I installed one in my 2011. For NTG 2.0, there may be some aftermarket solutions.

Wow - yes, expensive. As I have the dreaded 'Check Engine' light reminding me that a $3,500 repair bill is about to come up - P0017 & P0016 - all four sensors have been changed to no avail, time for a replacement timing chain idle gear and who knows what - I'll guess that I'll skip the back-up camera.

I just had that done last year !! Mercedes was involved in a class action lawsuit but settled out of court with an understanding repairs would be done with Mercedes paying for some cost . https://www.law360.com/articles/6351...t-class-action . Luckily I had an extended warranty which my dealership reluctantly accepted but they killed my A/C when they fixed my engine. That's another story for another time !!! lol
