It doesnt look too bad in the first pic but I would rather have the SL stay the way it is.

For those of you old enough to remember, looks like Jimmy Durante!

I'll keep my nose, thank you very much.

(The slots in the grill are nice, but the bulbous center is ugly in my opinion)

Looks more like Squidworth from SpongeBob SquarePants than Jimmy Durante; it's a bad idea and I hope it doesn't see the light of day on the SL.

Love the doors, still hate the nose although the sheen and dark ambience of the showroom hides it well - at least in pictures.

Still nice pic!

Its not really a case of ugly, its more like trying to compensate for something lacking....

This is one "What if . . .?" that should be left alone.

PLEASE MB do not ruin a potential classic! It may work for the SLR but I don't see how it will fit on the SL.

SLR nose for R230

The have a black model at Miami Mercedes Dealer. From the pictures I’ve seen of the car I did not like the front end and the back. But after seeing the entire car, in person, WOW!

The carbon fiber materials incorporated, and the paint job make the car look like it has not seams. It looks like it was carved out from a single piece of carbon fiber. The engine bay is a work of art. One of the salesmen told me that the nose will be incorporated into the 2006/2007 model year of the current R230.

For what it’s worth I was tempted into dipping into my trust account for a deposit, unfortunately the car is being auction in EBay: starting bid $ 500,000; where did I put my lotto tickets!

The June 2004 issue of Mercedes enthusiast magazine says, (from page 65)"The new SLKs nose takes its styling cures from the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, with a new front-end look that will feature on all models bearing the 'SL' designation from now on. The face-lifted SL, due in 2005, will complete the F1-style-nose sportscar trilogy"

I notice that is says "due in 2005", but does not indicate whether it would be as a model year 2005 or 2006. I would guess 2006 model. What do you guys think?

Also on page 67 they say that the 4 valve head introduced on the SLK will also find its way onto the V8 and V12 engines, but doesn't say when. Could this come in 2006 as well?

SLR Nose For R230

My local dealer indicated that they are will be delivering the first new SLK’s beginning in June. It’s a 2005 model but being introduced in the summer for sale.

Yes the SLKs are being delivered this Summer as 2005 models. My question is actually about which model year the SL will receive its facelift. I realize this has been much discussed/debated on this forum. However, the article in Mercedes enthusiast was the first reliable source I have heard that described the facelift.

SLR Nose For R320

I don’t believe Mercedes is going to advertise when they will do the face lift on the R320. We will probably need to rely on spy photo takes by various publications and enthusiast, while they are testing the car. They definitely did not informed potential buyers in 1993 that the 1994 would drop by $ 10,000, and after a revolt from consumers thy offered a rebate coupon on future orders for customers that paid the inflated $ 97,500 for the 1993 model year.

Two thing would happen if the know year for the facelift is advertised. First, customers, not happy the SLR front fascia design change will rush to place an order before the change occurs; unlikely.

The second reason is that sales will plummet significantly if the face lift year is known, not only because the design changes will be anticipated by many customers, and would make the current model look aged in comparison.

This type of drastic facelift, on the SL model, marks a milestone for Mercedes; it will be the first time they make such drastic design changes within the production model. But based of the very crowded hi-end automobiles, each one trying to outperform and out-design each other, I believe they have no recourse that roll with the punches.

And with the facelift I also anticipate would additional techno upgrades carried over from the SLR model; especially on their AMG SL models.

I for one, am waiting for news to come out on this change before deciding on ordering the new R320 model; they may give you SLR performance and techno upgrades for a fraction of the cost.
