is there an alternative shift knob interchangeable with the R230 or is it specific to our model

NO LONGER ACTIVE
Most all MBZ shift knobs are interchangeable (you just need on that has KeylessGo or not to match your car's options).

Also, check formymercedes,com. Jerry (the owner) has a good selection of aftermarket knobs and is very helpful if you need something "unique".
