Parking

Newbie here...

Taking delivery of a 350sl this Friday.

I live in Bangkok and all the car parks here have little concrete blocks which prevent you from backing into the wall. I have heard that the sl bonnet lowers when you park and then doesnt rise when you restart the engine - you therefore risk damaging your front bumper on the concrete blocks when you park.

Is this true?

Perhaps it only applied to earlier models?

Can you retrofit parktronic on the SL? (I have no idea whether my sl has parktronic or not - we have funny specs here - parktronic is standard on my E240)

You might be interested to know the price of SL models here.

350sl US$250,000
500sl US$315,000
55 AMG US$420,000

(Now doesnt that make you feel good about how much you paid for yout car!!)

With prices like this you can see why I worry about the front bumper...

A bucket on wheels
See with prices like that why would you still live there? move down here and get an sl55. Don't know about whether or not the car lowers when you park it but just make sure you park before the little brick car stoppers and you should be fine

Why would I live here!!

Where do I start? Well the girls, the weather, the people, the beaches, the food, the service, the staff, the price of everything except cars. Oh did I mention the girls?!

The car can be raised hydraulically if you have ABC which is not standard on the SL350, so it doesn't lower when you switch off. Even if you do have ABC and the car is raised, it stays up looking really odd.

Either way, with car prices like that, I think I'd give up and buy a 10 year old Toyota Corolla and spend the money on something else. Some countries are not car friendly, Australia is one which comes to mind, as does Norway. At least booze is cheap in Australia.

Enjoy your car.

Reminds me of a quote that I am sure has been seen in this forum...

"There are a number of mechanical devices which increase sexual arousal, particularly in women. Chief among these is the Mercedes-Benz 500SL convertible." credit P. J. O'Rourke

But the reality is... that if you are a westerner in Thailand, with two working legs and a full head of hair, you are extremely unlikely to be short of p_$$y. In many respects I would have thought that a 'bird puller' car was far more necessary and effective in the US or Europe.

Incidentally, with these sort of prices, Sls are pretty rare in this country. I am told my car is the 14th Sl in Thailand. I can wear that 350sl badge with pride!!
