Wiper issues

My 2006 SL350 has developed an issue with the windscreen wipers. The rain sensing is not working at all and position 2 and 3 both operate at the same speed. While in position 2 or 3 the wipers will eventually just stop in any random position and i have to turn them to position 0, then position 1 and then immediately back to position 0 to get them to park. I have checked the fuses (all good), replaced all related relays, disconnected the rain sensor (makes no difference) and checked for codes (no codes via my iCarsoft tool). I have also done the wiper reset that is mentioned in other forums, made no difference.

Any ideas??

There is a position sensor integrated into the wiper motor. It's possible that it is failing. If that's the culprit, you will need a new motor.

Is there any way to test this before buying a replacement

Using SDS, you can actuate both speeds and the off/park function via the driver's side SAM. Without access to SDS, you might try a bench test. Looking at the wiring diagram, there are four leads: Brown/Blue (pin 2), Red (1), Green (3) and Yellow (4). I am fairly certain that the BN/BU is ground. I am not sure about the others, but looking at the diagram and guessing, Yellow is the "park" sensor (it goes to ground when the wipers are parked) and Green and Red are +12v for the two speeds.

Have a look at this video and investigate to eliminate it as a potential cause.

This is a common problem on Mercedes Wiper systems and cleaning the contacts noted in the video above,as well as the contacts on the K26 module, often solves wiper related issues.

I have some R129 cars, and that video was interesting for me. But it isn't applicable to an R230.
