You should be able to tell by CarFax reports as well as making sure you have an authorized Mercedes Benz dealer look up the service history on any car you are looking at.

Had the CLS for 6 months now, and no problems whatever till late November.
Look, no car is perfect, how you feel about the problems is often a function
of the dealer's attitude. The CLS is no exception, and it's styling demands
some compromises too: the huge front pilar/mirror blind spots take some
getting used to, as does the awful rear visibility.
But on the freeway, the car is a dream: fast stable, simply stunning - it has
presence and poise.

Just got up my car back from service today: SRS - fixed (long and complex
operation requiring wiring harness changes, extensive surgery under the dash)
the handle came in and has been painted, install next week, the glove box
now works perfectly.
For each service, my dealer picks up my car and delivers it back (washed and
vaccumed, even deatiled in the summer months)- if it has to stay overnight
(like it did this time) they drop off a loaner (2005 E320 Diesel - a sweet
machine) . I can't complain, about the service or the attitude, and I love the
car.

Happy motoring to all of you in the SL forum...

Congratulations.

I envy people that are able to see their car as you do.

Wow, mind if I ask what dealer you use?

SL500 and A-CLASS
I wish my dealer would give out loaners.
