Push Button Start

Hi. I purchased a 2007 550 SL that has a push button start, but don’t work. When you press it it makes a noise but not even close to starting. Please help. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum! Please take a moment to visit the User Control Panel and update your profile to include your location (at least country). This information will then appear below your name and avatar on the left side panel next to each post you make. This will greatly help others to give you better information. If you are using the mobile version of the site, you will need to switch to the "full" version to get to the User Control Panel.

To start the engine, you must depress the brake pedal when pressing the start/stop button. Otherwise, it just switches on the ignition.

On another thread you mention your foot is on the brake pedal. So as you surely discern from Rodney's reply, a key to solving your problem is whether or not pressing the start button switches-on the ignition or not.

Have you programmed the stop start on the key fob perhaps as this is what I did to make my KeylessGo system function?. In the manual it explains under this heading, you need to press and hold the lock and unlock buttons for 8 secs until the red led in the fob flashes twice. Then lock the car and try to see if the keyleess entry works first, then get in and press the brake pedal then press the start / stop until it fires up.

I Will certainly try that when possible. Thanks very much!

I did not see the other thread, so if you are pressing the brake pedal and the engine is not starting, but the ignition is switching on, then your brake pedal switch is bad (and in which case you should have other problems/symptoms/errors relates tot he brakes).

If pressing the Start/Stop button does nothing - no start, no ignition/accessory switched on, then check the MFD on the instrument cluster. If you get a message like "Key not Detected", then you have a problem with wither the key or the car's KeylessGo antenna system. If the key works outside the car, i.e. you can press the door handle button to lock the car or grasp the handle to unlock it with the key in proximity, then they key is likely fine and the interior antenna is bad. If the key does not work for other KeylessGo functions, then maybe the key is bad or its battery is weak. Try replacing the battery in the fob, and also try your spare key.

If pressing the Start/Stop button gives no message on the MFD, and pressign the button does nothing, then you have either a bad button or bad wiring. The StartStop button is simply a momentary grounded switch tied into a pin on the EIS (electronic ignition switch). With KeyblessGo cars, when the EIS recognizes that pin is grounded and a valid key is detected in the car, it then enables the ignition to be switched on and/or the engine to be started. This is a single wire that runs through the gearshift, the center console, and into the EIS. It has known to get pinched or broken if work was done in those areas.

What that actually does is switch between global unlocking (all doors unlock on the first click) to local unlocking (only the driver's door unlocks on the first click, then the others on the second click). However, doing this has been known to 'wake up" a misbehaving key, so it's worth a shot.
