Dash cam powered from Vanity light.

Hi All

Just to say that I installed my tiny little Garmin dashcam behind the mirror without the need to pull the side panels off or under the dash. I tapped into the red wire for the vanity light at the overhead light, dead easy, with the ground just to chasis.
The vanity light only stays on for 10 secs after you lock the door then powers off, which is perfect for a switched feed to the dashcam, so it comes on when you unlock the door and the shuts down when you lock it !

Let me know if you need any info.

Are you talking about the small amber LED light in the mirror that stays on while driving?

No the light at the sunvisor, this connects into the overhead light module.

Ah, I see. I was trying to thin of a light circuit up there that would have power without the light being switched on. That makes sense.

push tabs in to release.

push tabs in to release.

Tap into the red wire that is a 12VDC line feed, that stays powered for 10secs after you lock the car.

Cables runs inside the wiper sensor housing

-12VDC just goes to metal frame work.

Dash cam I have is perfect, its the smallest one I've seen as I do not want it to be obvious and do not see the point in driving along with the camera screen on?

I have a Garmin 65W its the size of a matchbox and has:
  • voice control,
  • 180 degree vision,
  • 1080 HD,
  • Wifi,
  • Traffic cam alerts,
  • speed alerts,
  • includes SD card

For a unit so small it performs great, personally I have it hidden behind my mirror, as I drive 6 hr commute every week and in the early morning, prefer not to have the alerts coming on all the time.
i'll see if if I can get photos at the weekend.
