I've poked around the manual and the web but it is not really clear if you can use an SD card to load music onto the command hard drive.

Yes, I do it all the time. The only issue I've had is the it seem to be a bit finicky about the SD cards. I can only get it to read smaller ones, like 2GB, and no "HC" cards. Put the card int he slot, and then choose "Music Register" as the audio source. There is a menu option on that screen to copy files.

LOL! Well, you could have also bought a MY2009 or MY2012 as they are all the same (but you could not have bought a MY2010 because for some reason, they did not make any for that year! )
You can also create folders on your SD card and then copy those folders to the hard drive to help organize things, but it does not support playlists. One minor annoyance I have with the Music Register is that these is no option to repeat the folder. Once it plays the last song int he folder, to move to the first song in the next folder. Of course you can go back and select a different folder, but I have three folders - Favorites, Christmas and DIsco. I really hate it when I'm listening to The Red HOt Chili Peppers in Favorites and then it changes over to Silver Bells, or I'm into my Christmas list and it switches over to Love Rollercoaster.
