Extend Warranty...worth it?

I have read masses of posts on where to get the best deal for an MB Extended Warranty. The information posted is hugely helpful and informative. Thank you to all who contributed. However, I haven't been able to, yet, find a thread which discusses whether or not the thousands spent on purchasing an EW for an SL has been worth it. There's a lot of general commentary on the Internet about how the majority of respondents who bought an extended warranty didn’t use it and only a quarter of survey participants said they’d buy one again. I understand that buying an EW offers peace of mind and, occasionally, comes in handy when an expensive piece of technology goes on the fritz. What I want to know is how many of you R230 owners bought it, why you bought it, if you've ever had to use it and for what problem or defect. If the answers to these questions are already out there, please feel free to direct me to the thread. The date of the thread would be useful. Thank you!

The economics are very different between drivers-----do you have health insurance yes or no if yes describe all the times you used the insurance, parts replaced cost of the part bla bla bla.preferably in an spread sheet format.

The R230 is too old for an MB extended warranty. USAA sells one that is very good though.

The experiences of R230 owners who participate at MBWorld is too small a sample to be statistically significant. Instead, rely on your common sense.

Companies that underwrite policies for R230s are not ignorant. They understand the potential repair costs of these cars.

Nor are said companies altruistic. They are not in the business of subsidizing your ownership costs -- they are in the business of profiting from you, and they will not price policies which will cause them to lose money in the aggregate.

That said, if an R230 were your only car and you could not afford to spend 3 or 4 thousand on a major repair, then maybe an extended warranty makes sense. But if that is your situation, what makes yet more sense is to look for a more reliable vehicle which also has lower ownership costs.
