Battery control module. They can burn down your car/home. Someone just did a write up not too long ago on it. Easy fix but hazardous if ignored too long. Do a search.

It's hard to believe that MB is able to and willing to ignore this. If they can't figure out what the problem is then it's not thier problem? I say try harder.

I have three MB's here, one with loose wrist pins that MB knows about (they installed them that way) but won't help me with because I bought it out of warranty and one that has been known to spontaneously combust. I'm not comforted by the fact that it is a small number of cars that are affected, this one is in a garage with five other very expensive cars and I really would miss my garage if it burned down.

Would there be any negative affect to disconnecting the trunk battery when the car is parked for any length of time? I assume that the clock would need to be set and maybe I would lose radio presets. Anything else?

It does seem that the issue reveals itself in the 40-60K mile range.

Easy fix - once you get the trunk apart. You have to put the trunk lid in service mode.

Factory rebuilt modules are very expensive. Look on eBay for the deals.

I guess it depends on the type of gas, i.e. gasoline, propane, two day old tacos, etc.

Rude and funny all at the same time. I believe he was attempting to soften my rude comment about not knowing what gas smells like. We can be a little rude, we’re car guys after all, it’s good for the soul in small doses. Prevents people from getting too soft and touchy. We laugh at ourselves as well, it’s all good. This forum is a wealth of knowledge and occasional humor.

I meant my comment as a joke too. That's the trouble with the printed word, you can't see the smirk on my face.Rodney uses the username Rudeney - hence my comment.
