SL/R230: Rear tail lights

Rear tail lights
Don’t often get a look at rear tail lights working, but no warnings in dash so I assume all is good. So curious... when rear fog lights are turned on, top portion of left tail light brightly lights up.. nothing on the right and I assume that is correct.. however I can see 5 bulbs in the top portion of the right side.. when do they light up, or do they? Under normal lights on condition, no part of the upper lense lights up on either side. It appears that a thin strip in the lower part of the lense is lit up for tail lights and another brighter light for brakes....turn signals are all working. Top portion of the tail light assembly seems to be wasted space.
