SL/R230: Key Fob and push to start button
The error message "key not detected" indicates the key and Keyless Go system are not communicating, i.e the Keyless Go hardware is probably OK but the key is not being recognised.
I recently bought a brand new extra key from a Mercedes Main Dealer and specifically asked beforehand if anything further was required and was assured the key would work everything "out of the box". When the new key arrived I had exactly the same as you describe. Key remote locks/unlocks the car using the remote buttons and key will start the car via the slot in the dash. My dealer looked into it and found that the car ECU has a number of "Key Tracks" and each "Key Track" can have more than one key located to it. However....... for Keyless Go system each track will only work for one key. Turns out my new Key came from the factory, preset to the same track on my car as my original key.
They reprogrammed one of the Keys to another track in the ECU and now everything works fine.
