2006 SL500 Speaker Pop then full MAX sound

When I started my car yesterday I heard a pop sound and then one or more of my speakers sound went to maximum volume output (ear piercing loud). Turning the volume knob did nothing, so I turned off the stereo and the noise went away. On the way to work I tested it 2 times and the horrible static sound was still there, but after work the stereo worked just fine. I took it to my Mercedes Benz (non-dealership) mechanic and there were no error codes, so he said he could not do anything for me unless it happens again. Looking at this today, we think the subwoofer has stopped working, since there is no sound coming from it now.

I looked in the forums and cannot find anyone that says they had speakers do this before. Any ideas why the sound would do this?

My 2005 SL500 does this periodically. Hold the radio power button until it resets. I think its 10 seconds. After the reset everything will be back to normal
