TRUNK OPEN WARNING

Power trunk appears to be operating fine.. however when I use the power buttons to close, warning on dash that trunk is open comes on.. when I shut it manually everything is fine no warning. Any suggestions would be appreciated. 2011 SL550

I replaced the plastic around the lock mechanism.. unplugged the two lights and took off old part that was faded out... straightforward took the five plugs out... plugged in the two lights for the soft close function.. put the five plugs in and closed trunk.. all appeared normal. Didn’t start the car for several days.. took it out today and the trunk open warning cane on. Tried opening and closing trunk lid a few times, but still the warning.. I then closed it by hand.. warning went away. Still comes on when closing by power buttons but not when closed by hand. Never moved anything when I replaced the plastic part.. can’t imagine what’s wrong. Does unplugging the power lights cause need for a reset of some sort?

When closing by hand, do you slam the lid down? Do you notice the soft close mechanism operating, when you ‘lay the lid down’?

This is a common issue. When the hydraulics have closed the trunk lid pneumatics lock it down tightly, but the actuator tends to develop a leak. This is an easy repair, and is detailed in one of this forum's stickies.

Depending on Ray0124’s reaction to my questions (#4), of course - would his problem really be that simple...?

Well.. got in car this morn, opened trunk lid with button on door, closed it with button and worked fine, no warning. So if this were a leaking lock assembly wouldn’t it have warning after sitting all night? I’m thinking there is a sensor that might be out of alignment somewhere, or weaker than normal consumer battery. I might add that when open trunk message appeared, there were no lights or beeps when locking door. They are back as well. I’ve only had my sl550 for about two years, it’s garage kept and driven a couple times a week about 40 miles. I’m also wondering if the consumer battery (18 mos old) might be a little weak after sitting...could this maybe cause closing motor to not close lid hard enough?

Another possibility is that the trunk lid lock's catch mechanism isn't signaling the lid's position. This can be checked easily by having the trunk lid raised and pushing down on the catch. If the pneumatics do not engage, then the switch is suspect and could be confirmed with Star Diagnosis or possibly iCarsoft. Caveat: There must not be a fault in the PSE controller disabling the pulldown function. With no diagnostic tool removing the PSE pump's fuse from the rear fuse box and re-installing it will clear the fault.

Frederick NL... while I appreciate your comments, yours and Pmercury’s comments tend to be the most complicated solutions. There is no way trunk lid could be misaligned from sitting, and yes, if I add just a little manual force along with the soft close function, no warning appears. I have never had any issues other than I have described. Thank you for your input

Bobterry where would I find this fuse. Also, would disconnecting battery serve same purpose... assuming of course if the warning comes back. But as for now, all is good, but I suspect it may arise again. 2011 SL550. I don’t have any diagnostic scanners.. never had a need before, and as I am just a basic DIYer, I’m not sure they would really do me a lot of good. I’m just trying to see if there might be something simple I can do before I take it to a shop. I appreciate your input.. thanks

Bobterry.. also, just how far do I have to push the trunk latch in before I should hear pump kick in. Should I push it all the way as if trunk lid closed? I may invest in an icarsoft mb ll scanner after all in case a code is stored. Thanks again

I suppose you push it far enough to rotate the catch about 30 degrees. I imagine it will be relatively easy to rotate and then reach a point of resistance, and certainly the pump should have engaged by that point.

I have iCarsoft, Ray, and it is good value for money. But there is something that has come along which from member reports is considerably better for about the same money: The Foxwell NT510 Elite.

Simple: you lower the lid until there’s a tiny click. Apply no force at all. From there, the pneumatics should take over, shutting the lid tight. That was what I was referring to earlier.

UPDATE

Well, I unhooked battery for a few minutes, hooked it back up, synched everything. No open trunk warning. I now hear a distinctive click when trunk lid is closed. Car sat for about a week before being driven yesterday, still no open trunk warning. Everything appears to be working as it had before. Could it be that while working on trunk lid replacing plastic trim that I just tripped something when disconnecting the automatic close buttons? Only issue I haven’t been able to synchronize is the power forward and back buttons on back top of seat.. they only work when door is open, but they then fully move seats back and forward. Any ideas on how to synch them, they used to work regardless of whether door was open or not
