Lightbulb Hotline Archive: The engine has a misfire SL500

Having access to the biggest USA workshop live hotline databases, I will publish them here and might help some.


Customer Concern: The engine has a misfire.
Average Reported Mileage: 111842

Tests/Procedures:

1. Identify misfiring cylinder. The scan tool may be incorrect.

2. Reset ring gear adaptations with scan tool. Note: This should be done after each test step.

3. Connect fuel pressure gauge, should have around 58 PSI. Test during road test to verify pressure does not drop under load.

4. If fuel pressure drops after engine is shut off, lift fuel rail and check for leaking fuel injectors at misfiring cylinder.

5. Test fuel for contamination.

6. Inspect wiring harness going to injectors and coils for torn wiring insulation. Pay close attention to wiring resting on valve covers and injector rail.

7. Swap coil and spark plug wires from misfiring cylinder to known good cylinder. Note different length wires as indicated by the letter stamped on them. Ohm out plug wires. Specification is stamped on the wire itself. Most wires ohm out to 2.2 Kohms.

8. Inspect and swap spark plugs, cylinder to cylinder.

9. Smoke test for intake vacuum leaks.

10. Verify EGR valve is not stuck open. Apply vacuum to the valve in order to open it then quickly remove it to snap the valve closed.

11. Perform inspection for issues with the valve train or compression. This includes compression, cylinder leakdown, and running compression. Compare compression reading with known good cylinders to identify low output from a cylinder.

Tech Tips: Resetting of ring gear adaptation with the scan tool is needed to reset the engine computer's memory of misfire adaptations.

- Test Drive the vehicle to listen for sounds from the bottom of the vehicle. If you hear noises inspect catalytic convertors. All the (four) mis-fire codes were from the left bank. We moved all the coils and plugs to the right side bank and the misfires did not move. Changed out the Left Side cat.
