Is there a COMMAND upgrade available?

I have a 2007 SL55 AMG. The COMMAND unit has some issues. The clock keeps losing the correct time. The biggest complaint is that the display can only be seen from directly on, and is not very useable in sunlight. From the driver's seat it's hardly readable anytime. Day/Night, & brightness adjustments don't help.

It looks as though the firmware has never been updated. My MB dealer strongly advised against updating the firmware as they said once in a while it doesn't work and you end up with a bricked unit. Would a firmware update help the display issues anyway?

1) Is there a replacement screen that has newer technology that is visible, even in sunlight? 2) Is there a service that I can send the unit to for an upgrade? 3) Is the clock losing it's settings a common issue?

I want to retain the COMMAND unit, but I'm looking into aftermarket options: Any suggestions?
Thanks for your thoughts
Ed!

I have a 2005 SL500 and my unit "bricked" during an update (last resort after many issues). My MB repair shop sourced a rebuilt unit from an east coast source and installed it for about $1,500. It looks and performs great. It also came with a one year warranty. PM me if you want the specifics

you could have unbricked it yourself if you know soldering for 100 $ (price of the programmer + socket)

You can’t upgrade the “software” on the Comand unit to make it perform like a newer model.

Comand units are described by their NTG version.

http://www.mercedesmedic.com/identif...aps-head-unit/

Your option is to fix your current one, replace it with a working one or rip it out and install an aftermarket one.

Aftermarket ones range from direct plug and play units specifically for your model, to normal branded units (Pioneer/Alpine) etc that will require fascia kits and harnesses to install.

New screen

Today I received my Comand unit back from German Audio Tech after they replaced my blotchy and hard to read screen. They replaced the old screen with a new one. The visibility is now great from any angle and in bright sun. (Note that I live in Southwest Florida)

I had to remove the unit and ship to them, (they're in Southern California), pay them $300 in advance, and reinstall when it came back. Not a difficult task. Worked out well for me.

Can't help you with firmware.

Or if interested you could buy the unit I'm currently selling. It's from a 07 Sl550, and it's in great condition. If interested you can find it on eBay:

If you're seriously interested, I'd hurry up. There are 6 people watching it, and it probably won't be there for long at that price.

Thank you for all of your help. It's great that forums like this exist where people are so willing to share their knowledge. I obtained a rebuilt head unit. It took less than an hour to install. It solved all of my issues. Great to have a usable screen again!
