Automatic to Manual Downshifting

I just bought a 2003 SL500 and tried to do what it said in regards to putting in drive then move to the left to downshift. No matter what I do at any speed nothing happens when I moved the gearshift to the left or right. Am I doing something wrong?

On the shifter, the bottom most position "drive" has a "+"upshift and a "-" downshift embosed on it.
take your car for a drive and then shift up and down and see.
You also get to know your gear number on the dash console.
Automatic = "C" comfort or "S" sport
Manual = gear number
If all this doesnt work, then you could help by taking a video showing how you are upshifting and downshifting, and guys here will advise you if you are doing it wrong.
this is before you decide to spend cash at a mechanic checking your shifter.
