SL/R230: Replacing my outdated Comand System
I sincerely hope my thread and experience with Comand System problems and finally deciding to UPGRADE with 2021 Stereo System. I must start this lengthy thread with a tremendous CREDIT going out to the
"BenzNinja". I reached out to him several months ago to put together his DAS system which has worked flawlessly!! In addition to this Peter is always available to answer questions. Actually it was his recommendation on the stereo system purchase. During my dismantling and removal of all the obsolete equipment from my car for the install of my new system, I came across the main problem for the audio not working? A broken fiber optic line. (see photo). After the removal process of all the equipment, (see photo) on to the new install. Again the "BenzNija" Peter was available to help with the wiring connections and install recommendations. After a lot of fiddling, rerouting, fabricating and long hours, its looks and sounds amazing. I still use my existing Bose Amp and speakers with the original fiber optics, after the removal on the broken fiber optic line. I had to reset everything in DAS with Peters help but it works great. I know have: Stereo music, AM/FM radio , Bluetooth, Phone, color graphic Navigation. DVD capabilities, App capabilities, a Large functional touch screen.
I did lose my cup holder to accommodate my system but I was fine with that I didn't use it anyway. I installed a side mount antenna on the drivers side rear fender and removed the CTEL antenna, I know have a great strong radio antenna signal. All in all, I'm glad its done and I'm thrilled with the final product. I cannot imagine attempting this without the help of someone who is well versed and experienced with these things. that person for me was the "BenzNija". Thank you Peter. I do hope this is a help to some of you out there. I will answer questions if need be. Good luck everyone attempting this upgrade.
Cheers Wayne

When I replaced my Comand with a Kenwood DNX, I only removed the Comand. I also reused the existing AM/FM antenna which works great, I can get AM stations as far as 60-70 miles away from the origin, and I get FM & HD radio perfectly. The only original antennas I did not use, were the ones for them GPS and the Sirius XM. I installed the small pucks that were included with the radios under the speaker grille on the center of the dashboard.
I too kept the original Bose AMP and used a converter, and used the Axxess steering wheel control adapter to tap into the CANbus. Everything else was retained. True the CD changer and the navigation in the trunk are not usable, but then again, they're still there, should I decide to revert back to the original Comand. Since nothing other than the Comand was removed, I didn't have to code anything out either.
And becuase my radio is smaller (only 7" screen instead of 9"), I didn't loose the cup holders either:
