Small Oil Leak Near Trans-Help ID in Pics

Hi folks. My ‘05 SL55 AMG, 56K miles has developed a very slight oil leak near the transmission. Here are a couple pics. Can you tell me exactly what this is? There are a couple of small black plastic covers, one of which is moist. Also posted in AMG section, but perhaps this area is common across the R230 platform.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

It might be the seal between the engine and transmission. At least that's what the issue in my case. When I purchased the car, took it to the dealer for inspection. The guys said that it's barely seeping, making the area next to transmission wet. No major issue, had the car for 4-5 years now, without any increasing issues.

Thanks for the feedback. I know rear main seals can be problematic, I was just hoping that wouldn’t be the issue here since it normally involves dropping the transmission.

For what it is worth I had a damp spot in that area and suspected the rear seal since it was wet in that area. It turns out it was the valve cover gaskets. If you change the real seal you should replace the cover that holds the seal and the bolts are one use only so you need them too. My indy said that if he got the seal from Advance Auto Parts and it failed they would pay him the labor to replace it. Also at that time you should also replace the front seal on the transmission.

Thanks for the response. I did the valve cover gaskets myself a few months ago. I was actually hoping the oil was attributable to remnants from that project, but it’s all clean up above!
