Question 2007 550 Intermittent Starting

My 2007 MBZ SL 550 is well maintained and I've had my car for two years now and recently, I stopped at a gas station to fill up and I went to start up the engine and I got a whirring noise, all lights and indicators worked, but the engine wasn't cranking. AAA towed me to my mechanic after biz hours and the next morning my mechanic called me to ask what the problem was. The car had started for him. After running diagnostics, he changed the battery in the starter. A week later (at the same gas station) and stranded motorist asked for a jump. I helped him out, got him started and then my car wouldn't start. After 15 minutes, it started. A week after I was visiting my parents and the car (after sitting in their garage for 3 hours) would not start at all. Again I towed it to my mechanic. He couldn't figure out the problem but suggested I use the original Key Fob. I replaced the battery in the key fob hoping to fix the issue -no result. I'm hesitant to drive and get stranded

I'd first have the EIS (Ignition Switch Module) checked. You'll need a Mercedes mechanic with Mercedes Star Diagnostic software.

Typically EIS or shifter may be causing the issue. These are the Rube Goldberg versions of automobiles. Lots of steps needed to do simple tasks.

Both batteries need to be new or recently replaced.

Crank position sensor is a candidate.

Which scan tool do you have?

If the starter motor turns the engine over and it doesn’t start I would definitely go for the crank sensor, but the post says doesn’t crank, and that’s not crank sensor.

A heated crank sensor that is about to totally fail, will not allow the engine to start after the starter has spun the engine. A bad EIS or shifter or starter motor/ solenoid relay will not allow the starter motor to turn the engine.

That is exactly how my car was acting. It was the Crank Sensor but it showed up with a diagnostic tool not star.
