SL/R230: 09 SL550 Rear View Dimmer & Home link DEAD!

09 SL550 Rear View Dimmer & Home link DEAD!
Since I purchased this 09 SL550, the home link buttons are DEAD. I press buttons 1 & 3 together and hold forever and the light is supposed to illum. amber but never does. Also the mirror auto-dimmer does not function. I have checked fuses (like F12) and found none to be broken. At the dealer, they suggest (I guess the diagnostic doesn't tell them anything, or they do not employ it correctly) the problem can be solved by "just replace the mirror." They're obviously just guessing.
Of course I can get one from eBay for a pretty good price, but want to get all possibilities covered. One thing: the map lights on the bottom of the mirror DO work. Maybe related or unrelated: the small light and the cig-lighter port in the ashtray DO NOT work.
Does anyone have experience with this, and have any ideas?
