What are these buttons for?

The two buttons under the hazard button seem to have no function. One is red, one is blue, kind of implying heat and a/c. I see that they were only used a few years. Does anyone know what they do? Even the Mercedes dealership has no idea. Nor are they addressed in the Owner's Manual.

Thanks.

I don't have those buttons in my 2005 SL. Perhaps discontinued after 2004?

They slightly change the thermostat settings to warmer/colder.

Thank you alk247 and Frederick NL. It is odd that my Owner's Manual has that picture but without the buttons, and no description. Maybe my manual is from another year.

Since nobody at the Mercedes dealer knew what they were for, it shows once again the value and power of this forum. I am thankful for it and the members. In business we used to recognize this principle with the statement, "None of us is as smart as all of us." So true. That could even be a banner at the top of the forum.

Thanks again. Mystery solved.

I don’t have those in my 2003. I was wondering if replacing the unit, can it be replaced with a unit that does have these buttons?

I don't think you'd want to. It adds complication without any apparent benefit. I tried them and didn't notice anything different, probably why MB deleted them.

It looks like they were only on the 2004.

By the way, my manual is apparently not a 2004 manual; I found one on the web for the 2004 and it does have them in it.

I asked because it seems that the unit in my 2003 is not working ( warning lights flash, but no air is coming out of center vents) so I will need to replace with a used unit.

The vents are controlled with the three thumb wheels. If no air comes from them while the blower is working, that's where your search would begin.

How do I resolve that issue? I was thinking of replacing the center vent unit.

A simple MB dedicated diagnosing device would be a start.
Of course the setting in the lower climate control panel shouldn't be shutting your vents because you opted for warm (or cold) footwells..

I know this thread is a couple of years old but I'll reply anyway since I was reading this part of my owner's manual today.

The red and blue buttons are used to control the top center vent and side air vents located on the dash. Those vents are controlled separately from the other air vents. The 2004 owner's manual explains how to use the buttons on page 169. Press the red button to "increase the warm air flow" and press the blue button to "increase the cool air flow". Both buttons have a light on them that should light up when they're activated. Press the button again to turn off the added air flow. It's not clear if the buttons change the temperature of the air or just the amount of air or both. But I THINK the roller knobs control the amount of air flow and the buttons change the temperature.

From what I understand, the way these work is a sort of temporary "override" for the center dash vents to the set temperature on the climatronic device. So let's say you're driving and it's very cold out so you got the heat going at 80F and it's nice and toasty, but the air gets a little to warm or dry. So you hit the blue button and it starts to run some cool air in the cabin for a while then you hit it again to turn it off so things go back to normal setting. Same concept with the red button to draw heat in. I've seen some BMWs with this as well, but use a thumbwell. My previous 04 E320 had this as well, but it only had for cooling function and was a wheel knob. I think most Benzes MY05 and on did away with this feature.
