I have had this discussion a couple of months ago..with several MB insiders in the US who had test driven the car....even before the announced increase.. they claimed it already had and has over 500HP. They also said the Euro did have slightly more HP than than the US version due to emission standards....but agian they said both were actually over 500HP...and that MB was quoting consevative figures on the car. the German mag Auto Sport has tested the car 0-100kmh time of 4.3 sec. 0-200 kmh of 13.8

am very sorry, and we know this article already, even when this is not
correct at all.
All the new SL 55 from the factory, where we are deativate the speed
limitation will show
in the german vehicle documentation: 500 hp and max.speed 330 km/h.
That means, we are going to change your hp to 500hp, even we do not touch
the engine.
As on our tested engines, the standard SL 55 engines have all 500hp more or
less !!!
We hope to have an official statement within the next days !

it's red faces all round at Mercedes - engineers are going back to the
drawing board after they realised the SL55 AMG wasn't as fast as the new hot
E-Class. Not yet launched in Britain, the 476bhp supercharged convertible
went on sale in Germany in February. Around 100 had been delivered when
production was halted for six weeks to uprate engines to 500bhp.
This move ensured the SL55, the flagship of the AMG range, wasn't
overshadowed by the next performance E-Class. The E will use the same
engine, but as it's lighter and more aerodynamic than the SL, it had proved
quicker in testing.

Interesting response fouad...from what he appears to be saying there is a link between deactivating the speed limiter and achieving 500+HP from the motor...clearly in engine mapping rather than any physical changes to the engine...the question that still appears unanswered is how the SL 55 performance will sit in relation to the E55.
