Take off trunk paneling to access the rear shocks? 2003 Mercedes SL, R230

There is nothing wrong with my car but i think i will put some H&R or Eibach suspension parts on my SL R230 since it sits a bit "high"

Do you have to take off the paneling in the trunk to access the top/nuts and washers to take off the rear shocks?

I have taken off the paneling in the trunk a long time ago and if i remember correct the paneling is pretty "hard" and i suppose that it will break easy

I do not want to ruin the side paneling in the trunk of my SL class so i wonder if you have to take off the side paneling to access the nuts/bolts on the rear shocks/springs?

If it is possible to carefully "fold" aside without needing to take off the paneling so i can access the nuts for the top fasteners for the rear shocks it will save me some work

Is it possible to fold the paneling aside to access the rear shocks? Which i doubt since i guess you will break the paneling. This picture is of my car

Possible to fold aside the paneling to access the rear shocks/springs without breaking the paneling?

With the paneling off like on this picture it easy to access the rear shocks. This is a picture i found searching the net

With the paneling in the trunk off you get easy access to the rear shocks

You can remove the side panels quite easily to access the shocks top bolts. Open the boot, remove the fixings then operate the roof until the boot lid is vertical. The side brackets and mechanism are then out of the way and the panels will lift away without damage. They will be damaged if you try to bend them away.

Yes, but the plastic trim parts attached to the molded carpet are the pieces that usually break. When working on these cars it’s a decision between taking it apart completely an breaking more plastic parts and bending some parts out of the way snd hoping to break less.

I opt for the latter and hope for the best

Everyone has their own methods. Ive tried both ways. The only piece of trim attached to the side panels is around the hinges. If you bend the panels that piece breaks. Ask me how I know.

You can watch my hydraulic cylinder video and see how I took off most of those panels.

That's an excellent video. Thanks for sharing. So many people don't know how to put the lid into the service position. It's worth watching just for that but the whole thing is perfect and straight to the point of how to do each step.
