SL/R230: Electrical cable insulation disintegration
I'm wary this could lead to electrical shorts and failure in the electrical systems, Has anybody else noticed this degradation in the cables? how can this be solved / prevented?
cable insulation damaged

This might (hopefully) be limited to headlight wiring that was supplied as part of purchased headlight assemblies (wiring manufactured for and installed by headlight manufacturer).

Was anyone already able to resolve this problem of detorioated cables inside the headlight units?
I got an SL550 from 2007 (Japanese Specs) and experiencing the same problem .. 50% of the insulation is gone and i got a short circuit now in this wiring because both parking lamps stopped working. Rather disappointing from Mercedes, did not have this problem in my 300SEL 3.5 (W109) from 1970...
I found the following solutions on the internet but was wondering if someone could advice :
1) Buy new head units (expensive affair)
2) Use electric tape to cover the insulation and blanc wiring - Tried this but difficult to cover the wires deeper in the unit
3) Use Liquid electric tape - seems possible but i guess this will be messy if you do not remove the head unit
4) Use shrink sleeve over the damaged cable - This seems to be viable option, in the video they disconnect the wire from the plug and installed the sleeve, you will have to remove and disassemble the complete unit but i think this can work
5) Renew each damaged wire inside the unit - Also viable but quite a job, like options 4...
6) Buy a new internal wiring set for the head unit - I could not find this on the net as well
Anyone has experience with option 4 o 5 ? or has a link to the website for option 6?
Thanks a lot, Chris

I had a GL450 (2008) X164 that "needed a new headlight bulb". Upon examination, it also needed an igniter which was expensive from MBZ but found a cheap one (probably chinese) for pennies. Then, I saw that the wires bringing power to the headlights, was ridiculously thin, in fact amazingly so; and the insulation was falling off. It was awful. My cat's whiskers are thicker! LoL. I got a bottle of liquid electrical tape that's basically liquid rubber that you paint on like nail polish, and spent an afternoon putting ten or fifteen coats of that stuff on the wires, letting it dry in between applications. Finally put it all back together, and - Voila - it was perfect.
This is different from the famous engine wiring harnesses of the MBZ's in the mid-1990s, where all the insulation would fall off the wires after a while due to the chemical makeup of the insulation. Some law had mandated that those wires would be biodegradable. I bought a few of those cars very cheap when they suffered from that, and replaced harnesses with the same version but from a later model, and aside from that, they were of course great cars. I think in the case of the headlight assemblies, MBZ just bought those from some suppliers, who skimped on quality.
