Park brake cable

I purchased my SL ten years ago and the car has never had a functioning park brake. The handle is in the dashboard but is not connected to any cable. Since I've done without this so far, and live in the land of flat terrain (FL), I don't really need it. However, I have the time and reasonable ability, and wonder if connecting this properly is a worthy undertaking or something only accomplished by small contortionists with tiny hands? Any insights?

Just wondering if you're operating this correctly. The park brake is engaged by the small foot pedal above and to the left of the brake pedal. To release the parking brake, pull the handle on the dash. (Excuse me if I misunderstood your question and stated the bleedin' obvious) but it sounds like you've been trying to operate the brake from the release handle.

I probably misstated this. I don’t dare push the floor pedal in because there is no way to release the brake (to my knowledge), as the handle on the dash comes out in my hand unattached.

Ah ha!

Perhaps begin by removing the trim under the wheel and see if you can see what's broken in there. You might have to remove the two panels on the side of the console first.

It should be pretty obvious where the damage is, then probably you'll be able to repair it yourself.

Just did a small research. Take a look at this diagram for R230 SL (https://www.ebay.com/itm/203196208066).

If you can pull out the handle (part #110) entirely without seeing the cable (part #90) attached, this might mean the cable is loosed.

The cable should be attached like the following pic.

Hope this shed some light into your problem.
