2004 SL500
Moving transmission out of park
My 2004 SL 500 was flooded by a storm and has no power to the ignition key, I need to get it out of park to move it to higher ground to work on it. Other models you can do this by removing the push to start, I cannot find any instruction for this model. Is is possible to do?

Remove the shift knob, protect the lever with a piece of wood, and rap with a hammer while pulling back on the lever.

I had a similar problem with my SL and it turned out to be the relay for the third brake light which is located directly above your left foot when you are in the driver’s seat. Test it by pressing the brake and see if the 3rd brake light turns on on the trunk. If it doesn’t, remove the kick panel 2-3 torx screws, and and make sure the relay is firmly in place.
btw, this relay will “open” the shift gate when the brake is depressed. I might be able to get a part number for you if needed.
