remove door mirror from 'post'

tried to search but no luck

I want to remove the mirror housing from the 'post'. done this on my old Porsche and know it can be a pain as that spring is pretty strong. thinking that will make it easier to apply wrap to the 'post' and then reconnect the mirror with housing to wrap that.

I have a video but extension not allowed. can take a pic if necessary, have to take cover off .... again. it appears there is a clip holding down the washer over the spring.

just apply enough pressure on the top of washer (suspect easier said than done) and remover clip.

any info will be appreciated. trying to refresh this SL55 AMG

What exactly are you trying to do?

1 Remove glass from mirror housing.
2 remove complete mirror assembly from the door
3 split the mirror assembly at the hinge point
4 something else

You can remove all the plastics from the metal hinged assembly. I replaced non power operated mechanism for powered version.

I cant remember enough to describe exact procedure, but after removing glass, motor assembly and light, you remove some small torx screws and the main outer plastics slid out and off

removing the "base" plastics is more difficult as it is clipped in and requires gently levering off near the hinge point.

not sure why you would want to split the hinge though. but is can be completely removed from all plastics.

I just cant imagine applying the wrap to the base with the entire mirror in place. when replacing the turn signal lights on the mirrors determined how to remove mirror and cover.

I'll take another look but it did not appear I could remove the plastic on the base without separating the mirror at the hinge point. really think I need to separate the mirror at the hinge to be able to apply wrap to that base portion. then reattach mirror to apply wrap to that cover.

dont really want to take it apart at the hinge if not necessary. had to replace mirrors on one of my old Porsche and it was a pain.....

I also saw I can remove the whole mirror base from the door by removing the torx screws on the inside of the door frame under the small triangle of plastic. but dont see how that will help me apply wrap

thanks for reply.

You need to remove the mirror assembly from the door first. There are clips behind triangle to release the plastics from the hinge. The final clip is the tricky one as needs some force to separate it (near the small radius near hing, hopefully it will be clear after removing mirror and releasing the obvious clips you can see.

just finished installing the new mirror turn signal lights. when fixing the seat switches on the passenger door the little triangle on the inside of the mirror post came off. I could see the screws to remove the post from the door. do I correctly understand I need to disconnect the entire mirror assembly from the door frame, then I will be able to finish taking off the plastic cover on the base?

I can do that . and when looking closely it would appear the base post plastic would come off and over the mirror.

here is a pic with the mirror housing off.
thanks again.
