I'm in the process of swapping an AMG M275 into my SL600. As the front of the AMG engine isn't as clean as I like, I'm thinking of replacing the alternator. I also have no way to easily test that it works; would hate to replace it after the engine is installed.
I see its a water cooled alternator which is quite expensive. When I enter the part number of 275-15-00-50 into ebay I see lots of "normal air cooled" alternators that claim to fit a M275. But of course the mounting looks completely different.
Has anyone had success with one of the these "normal" air-cooled alternators?
Or is the strong recommendation to just purchase a proper replacement water-cooled alternator?
I do see one on Amazon for $399: Thanks.

Update - I just purchased a used one on ebay.
Still curious if a "normal" alternator could be used after the water cooling housing is removed and plugged.

Did you ever find an alternative? What did you end up purchasing? I have a 2004 SL600 and I think I need a new alternator.

No there is no alternative, partly because of the water cooled housing which also acts as the return line for the interior heater. Originally Posted by aolexy

I ended up not using the one I bought on eBay and could therefore sell it to you.
You would need to remove the cooling fan and serpentine belt to remove the alternator.
