How to remove Wind Screen ‘07 550sl

I hate the windscreen. How do I raise the rollbar but not the wind screen? Or, how do I remove the windscreen altogether? Thanks, Dennis

There are at least two different styles of windscreens out there. One from Mercedes and one from the Netherlands. You can find both for sale on Ebay and you should be able to look at the pictures and tell which you have. The European one is very simply and has L shaped brackets and the MB is much more sculpted looking. I already have one on order from the Netherlands and it should arrive in the next week or two and should have instructions, so after that I will be able to tell you how to remove that type.

There are some other types in England, Germany and in Europe but you're probably not going to have one of those. Both the Dutch and MB windscreens fold lengthwise in the middle and the back half is attached to the roll bar and moves up and down with the roll bar. The front half is hinged and you can raise it separately. But when you raise the roll bar both halves will be raised vertically and if you look in the rear view mirror then you will be looking through both screens.

If your screen is in good condition and has no holes in it then it should be worth a pretty penny, based on what people are asking for them on Ebay.

The owner's manual on my 2003 500sl tells how to remove the windscreen. IIRC lower rollbar, raise it a little, pull windscreen forward/toward motor. Since my rollbar was stuck up, I just pulled down on the windscreen.

Where at in the manual? I've read my 2004 manual cover to cover but I didn't see any mention of the windscreen.

I was unaware that you could remove the black windscreen part, I'll have to try that just for something to do.

I found the instructions for mounting and dismounting it in my 2004 owner's manual this morning. Assuming that you have an original MB roll bar, per the manual you have to raise the roll bar slightly and then press a button on the buckle on each of the two straps that goes around the roll bar and the buckles should come apart and release the straps. Then fully lower the roll bar and be careful not to catch the straps. Then you slide the windscreen toward the front of the car and out of the roll bar. I think that there is a button or a catch (probably two) somewhere near the bottom of the windscreen that you also need to push in order to release the windscreen. The windscreen is supposed to have come with a separate storage bag. It's also vaguely mentioned in the manual.

Your manual is very different than mine! In mine page 374 gives data on the tires and rims and page 166 has a illustration of the Automatic climate Control! My manual is USA Edition A, 2004. But I did finally find the instructions for installing and removing the windscreen on pages 186 and 187. It's buried in the middle of long discussion about the retractable hardtop!
