SL/R230: Trunk/boot stuck closed

Trunk/boot stuck closed
2009 SL350 Face Lift model Boot is stuck closed. Battery removed and boot closed by mistake. Tried the emergency key.
I saw utube showing access by removing 3rd Brake light, has anyone tried this? Any suggestions, brake light cost £15 so would be cheap solution. Thing is utube looks authentic just looking for practical advice before trying

Have you used emergency key previously?
If not it is not intuitive how it works.
Turn key 90 degrees then pull the release handle while lightly lifting.
The key does not open the trunk, just unlocks it.
If the key does not turn, try some penetrating oil in the lock, and GENTLE persuasion by twisting key.

Does the key turn a FULL 90 degrees?
Does the handle feel like it is acting on something when you pull on it
Another possible option if you can get to the engine compartment is to hook 12v to the front pre-fuse box, but you should seek more advise before doing this as I do not have it's electrical drawing with me to give good advice.

If you insert the key, does the dash light up? If so, the trunk release button on the door should work.

When you turn the key it won't open the trunk but it will allow you to use the handle above the license plate to open the trunk. The key is strictly mechanical. Even if you don't have a battery, it will still allow you to open it.
