What brakes are you guys using?

I have a 2011 SL550 with the sport package so the back brakes are a different size than the front. So far the the only front & rear set with the matching dimension is a specific power stop z23 model which is around $700 total. If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know. Also how much are you guys paying for front & rear rotor and brake replacement?

I went with Akebono ceramics on the rear and, becaused Akebono does/did not make a front pad for the Sport Package, I went with Dynamic Friction 5000 ceramics for the front. Zero complaints on both and I really like the way these pads treat the rotor and not having to constantly clean brake dust off the wheels. Cheers Socks

ditto on low dust ceramics. Since I do no performance driving, I just search ebay using my make, year, and model for ceramic brakes front or rear. Sort results by lowest price including shipping. Pads for one axle usually show up for under $40/axle. I search Amazon and imported parts sites like that too.

nice I was looking at the dynamic frictions on rockauto, but more at the HybriDynamic pads.is their “HybriDynamic” pads just low metallic pads with their own name? I’ve never heard of them do you have any info on if they’re good or not?

Never heard of them until I bought the pads 22K miles agos - I wanted ceramic and found the front brakes on a 2009 SL550 with the Sport Package are a little bigger and there were not a lot of choices. That said, I am very happy with the one I installed. Cheers Socks

Did you install them yourself? I’d really like to do it myself but don’t want to mess up anything if there’s something special I need to do. Would love some insight if you’re able. All the videos are for different models. Can’t find r230

On every non-AMG MB I've had, the combo of Zimmermann rotors and Akebono Euro Ceramic pads has served me well.

Performance driving or not doesn't matter, IMHO.

You could be cruising along with the pace of traffic on the highway and all of a sudden need to brake hard. In that scenario, it will take a lot to stop ~2.5 tons traveling at those speeds.

Not saying you have to use track duty hardware or even OE Genuine MB here, but sticking to known / proven brands on brake components is a very good practice.

Hi R230King,
I have replaced brake pads and fluid on my 2003&4 SL500s. YMMV on 2011 models. I think it will be nearly the same.

Raise car to highest setting with center console button. Disconnect negative battery cable on consumer battery. It may not be necessary. But, disconnect negative cable on front/starter battery. (The SBC brake controller can operate brakes while you work and don’t expect it. The ABC/suspension can raise or lower wheels similarly.) I bled brakes with a vacuum pump tool, and did not bother the SBC unit.

SEE THE FILE CONTENT I DEVELOPED BELOW:

Search eBay Amazon by car spec I found ceramic brakes on eBay or Amazon by searching by my car type: 2003 SL500… (parts that fit your car). You can often get the part number there, then search by part number. Pelican Parts is another good site to determine part numbers. I bought Ctek and Centric ceramic pads using search methods above. I specified front or rear pads. I specified search by lowest price including shipping.

Since I practically never do performance driving, the inexpensive ceramic pads have produced excellent low dust, good braking, low noise results on several of my Porsches and Mercedes. With these ceramic pads, the light dust level is much easier to clean off of wheels and tires than the sticky factory model dust.

SL55 AMG Brake Pads Replacement - Bing video FRONT pads, just tap out retaining pins, pull retaining clip, slide out pads, compress pistons, lube contact edges, replace pads(15) Rear Brake Service | Mercedes-Benz Forum has DAS SBC reset procedure: On my iCarsoft it was as Rudeney said - Service->EPB->Choice of "Deactivate" or "Reactivate". Then follow on screen instructions. There are a couple of warnings about brake fluid level and a couple of "are you sure?". 'twas easy.

BTW, for people who have other MBZ-specific handheld diagnostic tools (like Autel and Foxwell), check the under the "Service" menu in the EPB (electric parking brake) section. My Autel MD808 and another off-brand MBZ-specific tool both allow SBC activation and deactivation under the EPB service menu.

In DAS IIRC go to Control Units>Chassis>SBC>Activate>After Maintenance…

I've found the best way to make sure you buy brake parts that are gonna fit on the car without surprises or problems, is to call the Benz dealer parts department, giving them the car's VIN number. Then they can look up the brakes for the car specifically. Ask for prices for the parts then ask for the part numbers. Make sure to get them written down correctly. Then, you can buy whatever brand parts you want, from wherever you want, as long as they cross reference to the original parts. I once owned a 2002 S500 W220, and ordered brake parts. Imagine when the car's on the lift, brakes are off and the new parts don't fit! The car apparently had AMG brakes, an optional purchase when the car was ordered. On my 2003 SL55 AMG, I opted for new Zimmermann rotors, they're German made, and got Brembo pads. They stop great, but because of brake dust on the wheels, next time I will look into ceramic pads. And remember all R230s need the SBC disconnected one way or another, before working on the brakes!
