I agree with you about the trim clips. I removed the rear side panels when I fitted illuminated door sills and it's almost impossible to get them out without breaking the fixing clips. Most of these parts are designed to be installed and never removed. Even the plastic rail along the bottom of the door opening which covers the join of the carpet to the door sill breaks easily when you remove it.

Also correct is that Aston Martin and Bentley offer a custom tailoring service which Mercedes owners can only dream about or in the case of LovinSL600 go to huge lengths to work around. Sure the Aston doesn't have the gizmos of the SL but neither does my newly acquired 911 and I actually quite like the reduced complexity.

When you take off the rear panels around the rear of the car to install the sills, I agree, those metal clips have no chance of doing the right job unless you replace them. Also, the metal is not strong so if you don't get the panel lined up perfectly and push the circular metal clips into the hole exactly they will bend and then you have to start over with new clips.

I also agree with the rails that cover the carpet around the door sills. They are plastic and clip into the metal clip. Once you remove those rails you have no choice but to rip the plastic on the tab where the metal clip holds the rail down. These also get dirty a lot except now that I have black maybe that won't be a problem. I have two extra rails for each side in my garage at all times to replace as necessary.

OK guys, it is Monday and the car shows up at the rail station today, 20 minutes from the VPC.

The war starts today for a release and delivery of my car by late Tuesday.

I hate this part. They could make it really easy at the VPC but they won't. Fighting with 1000 other cars coming into the VPC by boat today. Wonder how many of them are SL600's or SL65's.

Get my point?

Will keep you posted.

The best thing you can say about those rails is that they are inexpensive - less than $20 + tax here - but they are held in place by metal clips like a barbed fish-hook. They are held tightly but to remove them, you have no choice but to tear the plastic.

Not sure why you must have the car so quickly - there's a lot of work to be done - I took more than 4 hours to do my door sills and adding time pressure to the mechanic is not going to help avoid any costly mistakes like damaged paintwork.

My mechanic is an absolute perfectionist. He will never make a mistake. He is coming in at 5:00 AM and will work all night until the car is done. He is 26 so youth is on his side. We've been here, done this before so not to worry, everything will be perfect. He is on vacation and coming in during his vacation with his family so he wants to do it all at once. He won't rush. He has the blue tape. Everything is protected and he is incredibly careful.

Besides he knows what is at the end of the rainbow when it is all done.

Well, we're all looking forward to seeing the finished result. Just hope that after all the planning and waiting, not to mention the expense, the reality matches your expectations!

That has been a major ordeal. Car sat at railroad station for 3 days. Finally today they retrieved the car and it has been processed and is ready to ship.

There is a possibily it will show up at the Dealer on Thursday but we won't know for sure until we call in the AM.

The Netstar Vista report said it was completed and ready to ship. We just won't know until the AM whether it has been picked up by the car carrier. The VPC is only 5 hours away so it could make it Thursday.

Will keep in touch.

Can't believe it sat at the railroad station for 3 days.
