navigation cd

I need to update the navigation cd for California/Nevada, which is three years old. I called MB and I was quoted $ 180 for it. When I purchased the car it cost $125 for all the CDs covering all the states. I wonder if the update can be purchased through a different source. Who manufactures the Commando?

The company is called NavTech but I am not sure it will be less expensive. I am not even sure you can buy it direct.

The COMMANDO is made by Bosch/Blaupunkt. You can get any "DX" type navigation CD from various manufacturers (other car manufacturers also use the same discs). There are some posts around here detailing how users got discs from other sources.

That is the company that manufactures the hardware but the disc does not come from them.

The disc comes from NavTech on the SL's.

He asked who answered the COMMANDO, so I just answered that.

Regardless, you can in fact get the discs from Bosch/Blaupunkt. You can get them from Audi and Volkswagen too. There are a bunch of places they are available and it has been reported here at mbworld. NavTeq is the company that develops the map database... that is "DATA". If you look at the data on the disc, there is Bosch specific info on it also, and the map data is licensed. I have the disc and a sleeve in my hand right now. It says Bosch on the disc, Bosch on the sleeve, and Bosch on the part number sticker. It does say Copyright Navteq AFTER the Copyright Bosch.

This mapping information for ALL Mercedes (not just SLs) comes from NavTeq, whether the hardware is Bosch/Blaupunkt, Becker, or Alpine.

BTW, you can order discs direct from NavTeq.

Are you saying that any other car company that uses NavTech discs in the navigation units can be used in a Mercedes?

Here's what the NavTeq website says when you look for the S-class disc:

Varies from time to time and from vehicle to vehicle. If you search you'll find varying accounts of people who couldn't get discs, and then those who did. Plus, I don't think MBUSA is gonna sell update discs for people in Europe.

Wait till October. They had a sale last October for $125 to upgrade all your CDs.

Just an example I tried... I picked up a Blaupunkt Travelpilot DX disc today for around $20, it's got 2004 data (I think it's on closeout because there's a 2005 set now). Tried it out, works fine. I think the people that need to be more careful are the 2000 S-class owners (might not take DX discs without software upgrade), M-class owners (uses Alpine system), and naturally the owners of cars with DVD-based navigation.

Give it a try!

(there's a thread somewhere else on mbworld where someone was asking whether to get D-navi or C-navi discs from Bosch... the D-navi is "DX". Continental Imports sells the original discs in a set for the same price as MBUSA, but they break up the sets for a lot cheaper.)
