No they dont; the connector you show has a shaft (ground) and a tip (signal). A stereo connector has an additional ring between the shft and the tip to carry the signal for the other channel. All walkman style headphones are like that.

Exactly, the shaft, the ring, the tip. The lead you showed in the first picture doesn't have the ring.

That jack is also 1/4", the one you need is 3.5mm. You may be using a 3.5mm to 6.35mm (1/4") adapter.

blueSL, it's a slide on adapter on the headphones.

Uh, let me take a picture of mine actually, I just stole those off a website.
I guess this means I'll actually have to put clothes on...

Okay folks, you should use a plug such as the gold one, because it'll transmit stereo, unlike the one on the right (silver) because it'll only transmit one side; mono.
