My Sl

Hi all,
Just wanted to share with you some pictures that I took using my cell cam ( 2004 SL 500.)
Sorry about the quality of the pics. I'll try to post some better pics when I get a chance.

Sweet. Where did you go for the quad exhaust and how much did it cost? Did you have to make modifications to the rear of the car to get the quad exhaust to fit?

Thanks Saud.

If this car is an SL500, how come it has AMG emblems on the trunk? Is this and the pipes something they do in Europe?

I also noticed the AMG tail lamps. Was this standard or did you change them afterwards?

Hi,

Chris 45971,
The quad exhaust is the original SL55 AMG one and it coasted me about 9,000 Saudi riyals (about $ 2,400 plus labor).
As for the modification part, I changed the rear bumper so that the quad could fit in. I was told that it’s better to change it than modify it.

LovinSL600,
I totally debadged the car and added the AMG emblem among other AMG items such as the SL55 cluster.
The pipes are something I added and it was ordered through the dealer (AMG accessories).FYI it’s not a tip.
The AMG tail lamps were change by me too.
I basically ordered every AMG feature to the car except the steering wheel, which I could not do anything about (some of which were ordered with the car and the rest were added upon arrival).

Cheers,
Saud

That sucks. I cannot get black designo. They offer designo on 3 paint jobs.

Wow neat. Does the car have the sound of the SL 55 with the quad-pipe exhaust system, or is it just appearance? If I'm hearing you right, it sounds like they replaced the entire exhaust system (more than the tips). I didn't know they could do that. I'm going to ask a couple of dealers around here if they would be able to do the work on my 500. When you say $2400 plus labor, do you mean with labor included?

Thanks for answering my questions Saud.

Forgot to ask. How much did it cost to have the instrument cluster replaced. I really like the look of the AMG one compared to the one that is currently on my car. Can you provide a photo?

Thanks again Saud.

Chris 45971,
The sound is much louder than the regular 500 exhaust, about 90% as loud as the 55. keep in mind that the 55 has a compressor engine which will cause the sound to be louder than the 500 but not that much.
Yes the entire exhaust system was replaced and it’s part of the AMG accessories (not sure if they have this for US cars, you better check with the dealer). As for the cost, that $ does not include the labor.
The instrument cluster coasted me about $2000, but keep in mind that it was a very hard and tricky job I hope your dealer can do it. It’s doable but they might tell u you can’t but you should insist lol.
I’ll post a pic later when I can.
Cheers

Thanks for the pics Saud. Very sweet.

I have a strong feeling I'm going to have a hard time finding a dealer that will be able to change the exhaust. I'm going to try until I find a taker.

Why go through all the expense to change a car into something it isn't? It probably costs close to the difference of trading in for at least a used SL55.

Juice it,

You’re right, the price was close to a brand new SL55 not even used (difference was about $20,000 before I added anything to the car. Then the difference was about $10,000-12,000 after adding the AMG accessories).Used cars were out of question.

I have had SL 500’s since I was 19 years old and love this car so much. And when I ordered this one it was the 1st year to launch the 7 gearbox and wanted to have it since it was a new feature in SL’s. I got the same comments from a lot of people, but I want to make it clear that me getting a 500 was not because I could not get the 55. Meaning, if my car was an SL600, which costs almost the same as the 55 I still would have added the AMG kit.
I feel like I over explained myself here lol.
Cheers,

I am all for doing mods to a car but I am not a fan of trying to change a model into another existing "better" model. Changing things like the exhaust might give you better performance but changing things like the instrument cluster and badging to say "AMG" on a non AMG car is not something many would do. But, it is your money and I am sure I do plenty to some of my cars that others wouldn't do so as long as you like it, thats all that matters!

Tiggerfink,

Thank you for your short and sweet reply.

SL55406,

Sorry, but it’s my money.
With all due respect, please don’t assume things.

Juice it,

I understand your point and respect it.
Just for the record, I did not add SL55 & V8 Compressor badges (wrong thing to do in my opinion). I just added the AMG badge which to me indicates the styling and not the engine.

FYI, when I was in the states (Boston), I saw in my dealer’s show room a brand new SL500 AMG (R129).Well, back then the engine was the same as the regular 500, but the AMG emblem was placed by the manufacturer and indicated the AMG styling.

I like your car, but IMPO if some owner wants to rebadge a car is for his happyness and why not, like some fellow member say some time ago, if you own a original picasso, did you hate someone just for havig a replica? or did the replicas of a piece of art is a sin? I also put a cluster amg in my car ( found in E Bay ) and I personaly like it better than the original. I also put a quadra exhaust to my car ( maded by GAP) and also looks better than the original.

I'm just busting your chops. I should be more sensitive as I'm in similiar shoes .. 25yrs old, own a plane, buying a 06 SL55 .. I get asked all the time how "my parents let me buy a plane."

Its my hard earned money, wtf do my parents have to do with it. I just let people assume whatever they want to assume.

Anyway, I retract what I said, and I meant it only as a joke.
