SL/R231: Back Up LEDs

Back Up LEDs
Can someone check your reverse lights for me? When I put my SL into reverse the two outside LEDs on both the left and right sides come on. But it looks like there are four more LEDs in the center of the back up light that never come on. I've tried with and without lights on, no difference. I asked the dealer if this is normal, but he didn't know, and doesn't have another SL to compare to. Do all of your LEDs light when in reverse?

My best guess would be that the middle leds are used for the rear foglamp for cars sold in countries that have them as a requirement (e.g. EU countries)

On the R231 SL550, keyless go is part of the P01 option package.
The Start/Stop button is on the dashboard to the right of the steering column.

can be turned on in low visibility situations.
The idea is that when regular tail lights are too dimm for heavy fog, the Fog tail light can be switched on to warn oncoming cars.
I'm not 100% certain, but I think MB is using those center LED's for the fog tail light.
